First attempt...HELP

This was a lot harder then I thought it was going to be. This picture is of my crazy brother. If you can manage to take your eyes of his tattoo's :) you will notice the background is blurry, almost as if it is going in a clockwise circle. I need help though cause I took about 90 portrait pictures and this is the only one that came out with a semi-blurry background. Anyone have ideas on this trick besides lowering my aperture?

I love how the light looks in the trees in the upper right corner.
